Beach House Essentials Every Coastal Short-Term Rental Needs
Guest (and host) approved beach gear, summer vacation essentials, and coastal favorites we personally use and recommend for beach & vacation rentals and personal family beach days.
Whether you own a coastal short-term rental, manage a beach house, or simply love spending weekends by the water, the right beach essentials can completely transform the experience for both guests and owners alike.
At Mickler & Co., we’ve learned the best beach rentals feel effortless — thoughtfully stocked with the kinds of items guests genuinely appreciate, use daily, and remember long after checkout. From shade systems and beach carts to portable fans, quick-dry towels, giant COLD bottles of aloe vera after too much sun, and family-friendly beach games, these are the practical upgrades that make beach days easier, more comfortable, and a whole lot more enjoyable.
As both short term rental designers and frequent coastal Carolina beachgoers, we’ve learned that the little things matter:
a beach cart that actually rolls through sand,
towels that dry quickly,
portable shade that doesn’t become a wrestling match in the wind,
backup shade for when there is no wind (learned that one the hard way),
and guest-ready conveniences that help create a stress-free coastal stay.
We’ve also learned that people who don’t live near the beach rarely pack properly for the beach. A great vacation rental provides the things infrequent beachgoers don’t even realize they need… until it’s too late.
Whether you're stocking your Wrightsville Beach rental, updating your family’s Oak Island beach house, or simply looking for beach essentials your guests and family will actually use, these are the items we order again and again.
Beach rental Essentials Guests (and hosts) Actually Use
1. King Camp Low Profile Beach Chairs
Low-profile beach chairs make long beach days so much more comfortable and are far easier to carry across the sand than bulky upright chairs. We especially love these for smaller beach carts, quick setup, and relaxed afternoons by the water.
2. Quick Dry Turkish Beach Towels
Quick-dry Turkish towels are one of the easiest upgrades for a beach rental. They dry quickly, shake out sand much easier than traditional towels, and take up far less storage space — which matters when you’re stocking a coastal rental for guests.
3. Sand-Resistant Beach Blanket
Perfect for larger groups, sunset picnics, or families with kids who need extra space beyond beach towels alone. These are especially helpful for creating a more comfortable “home base” setup for longer beach days.
The Shibumi has become one of our favorite beach upgrades for windy beach days at Wrightsville Beach. It’s lightweight, easy to carry, and much easier to transport than traditional umbrellas or heavy canopy systems.
Fair warning though — they can get a little noisy on especially windy days, and some beaches (including Myrtle Beach, SC) have restricted or banned them due to visibility and safety concerns. We also wish they came in more color options since almost everyone on the beach seems to have the same blue color combo. White & tan would be amazing, if anyone at Shibumi is reading this. :-)
That said, for beaches with steady coastal wind, they’re still one of the easiest and most functional shade setups we’ve used.
5. Rengue Beach Tent Sun Shelter
For larger groups or beach days with little to no wind, this type of canopy setup can be a game changer. It creates a much more comfortable shaded “home base” for families, kids, snacks, coolers, and longer beach afternoons.
The UPF 50+ coverage, sandbag anchoring system, and larger coverage area make it a practical option for both guest use and owner beach weekends.

6. Beach Cart with Sand Wheels
A quality beach cart is one of the most-used items at any beach house. Oversized wheels make all the difference on soft sand.
7. Extra Large Mesh Beach Bag with Cooler Compartment
One of the easiest ways to make beach days less chaotic is having a bag that can actually handle wet towels, sandy toys, sunscreen, drinks, and random beach gear all at once.
The built-in cooler compartment is also a nice bonus for keeping drinks, snacks, or sunscreen cool during long beach days without needing to carry a separate cooler.
An inexpensive but incredibly useful item for protecting phones from water, sand, and sunscreen.
9. Portable Charger / Power Bank
Because someone’s phone is always dying halfway through the beach day, especially if they’re in charge of the tunes.
10. Beach Cup Holders w Phone Pocket
One of those little beach items people don’t realize they need until they use them once. Prevents water bottles from tipping over and a mouthful of sand with your beverage.
Family-Friendly Beach Favorites for your short term rental
11. Spikeball Set
A beach favorite for older kids, teens, and adults that instantly gets everyone outside and active.
Easy, lightweight, and perfect for families looking for simple beach games that don’t require much setup. Can be played in the water as well!
If you’re stocking a family-friendly beach rental, having a simple beach toy set available is one of those small details guests genuinely appreciate. This set includes enough variety to keep younger kids entertained for hours without parents needing to pack bulky toys from home.
We especially like sets like this for coastal rentals because they’re lightweight, inexpensive to replace if needed, and easy to store in a beach closet or outdoor storage bench. It’s also one of those things that makes a beach house feel more thoughtful and guest-ready for traveling families.
14. Boogie Boards
A good set of boogie boards is one of those beach house staples that guests of all ages end up using constantly. They’re lightweight, easy to store, and perfect for keeping kids, teens, and even adults entertained for hours in the water.
We especially love having a few available at coastal rentals because they instantly make the beach experience feel more fun and memorable without requiring a huge investment or a lot of storage space. Lightweight foam boards like these are also easier for younger kids to carry on their own and hold up well for casual beach use throughout the season.
15. Waterproof Bluetooth Speaker
A small portable speaker instantly makes beach days feel more relaxed and enjoyable.

16. Brush On Mineral Powder Sunscreen
Perfect for quick sunscreen touch-ups without greasy hands or sandy lotion bottles. If you’ve ever tried to re-apply sunscreen to a sweaty toddler, try this once and we bet you’ll never go back to cream lotion!
17. Giant Aloe Vera Bottle (in the Fridge)
Trust us on this one. Guests may not think they need it… until they REALLY need it. Store it in the fridge for a cooling treat after too much sun!
This has become one of our favorite beach bag essentials for hot summer beach days — especially for families with kids, babies, or anyone needing a quick cool-down break in the shade. The clip-on design makes it easy to attach to beach chairs, carts, canopies, or strollers, and the rechargeable battery is incredibly convenient for longer beach days.
We also love having portable fans like this available in short-term rentals because guests rarely think to pack them themselves, but end up using them constantly once they arrive. It’s one of those small comfort items that can make a surprisingly big difference during humid coastal afternoons.
19. Panama Jack Lip Balm with SPF
Small detail, big difference after a full day in the sun. Plus the Panama Jack flavors are AMAZING!
20.Sting-kill First Aid Anesthetic Swabs
One thing people don’t realize about beach vacations until it happens? Jellyfish stings, bug bites, and random beach scrapes are pretty common — especially for kids. Keeping a small pack of sting relief wipes in your beach bag or rental first-aid kit is one of those simple things guests end up being incredibly thankful for.
Beach & Pool Extras We Always Keep Around our vacation rentals
These oversized float chairs are one of those simple summer extras that guests end up using constantly during beach and pool vacations. Lightweight, easy to store, and fun for both kids and adults, they instantly make pool days feel more relaxed and vacation-ready.
A good set of swim goggles is one of those small vacation items that gets used constantly at both the beach and the pool. They’re inexpensive, easy to store, and especially helpful for keeping kids entertained longer in the water.
23. Snorkel Sets
Snorkel gear can make beach trips feel much more memorable, especially for older kids and teens exploring calmer water areas, piers, or tide pools. Even if they only get used a few times during a stay, they’re one of those fun surprise extras guests genuinely appreciate finding at a beach house.
These reusable water balloons have become one of those summer items kids get completely obsessed with. They refill in seconds, don’t leave broken balloon pieces all over the yard or beach, and are much easier for younger kids to use than traditional water balloons.
Classic pool floaties are always a hit for both kids and adults and instantly make pool days feel more fun and vacation-ready. Lightweight, easy to store, and affordable, they’re one of those simple extras that almost always gets used during summer stays.
